Description

Many organic compounds are prone to decomposition at elevated temperatures. Separation by distillation at normal(1 atm) boiling point is not an option,so water or steam is introduced into the distillation apparatus. The water vapor carries a small amount of evaporated compound into the condensate bottle,where the condensed liquid phase separates for easy collection. This method effectively allows distillation at lower temperatures,reducing the degradation of the desired product. If the material to be distilled is very sensitive to heat,steam distillation can be carried out under reduced pressure to further lower the operating temperature. After distillation,the steam is properly condensed. Typically,the direct product is a two phase system of water and organic distillate allowing separation of the components by decantation,partitioning or other suitable means.
